A mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning “circle” and is usually a square or circular motif, representing the universe and ever deepening layers of the self—as found in spiritual traditions to develop a sacred space as an aid to meditation and trance induction. In these mandala-like pieces I am concentrating and harmonizing nature through reproduced symmetry. Our eyes are wired to see and respond to symmetry, because the human face is symmetrical. Creating symmetry from organic growth places a new order to the face of nature, which emphasizes an intelligent form with the possibility of communication with us. It can be hypnotic to look into the “eye” of nature. Visually, this type of symmetry can intensify nature’s complexity, its presence, and its apparent sentience.
